How do I know if my home needs to be rewired?

It isn't always easy to spot if your property needs to be rewired as many cables are hidden in your loft or behind your walls. At BAWN Electrical Ltd, we can offer you a comprehensive survey to determine whether or not your home needs rewiring and what the cost will be.

Establishing whether or not your home needs to be rewired can depend on a few factors, including the age of your home. Many homes built before 1984 do not have an earth cable and were wired using aluminium cable. This type of cable is 55 times more likely to cause a fire over copper wire, which is used today. An earth cable prevents electric shocks in the event of an overload of power going to your electrical equipment and we at BAWN Electrical Ltd know that this is paramount for the safety of your family.

Full Rewire

If your property hasn't been rewired in the last 30-35 years, it more then likely needs to be rewired to meet current standards. If you are planning major refurbishment or remodelling of your property, then is its necessary a full rewire if advised over a partial rewire and here at BAWN we are happy to help with all your design needs.

Partial Rewire

If you are adding an extension or converting your loft or garage then only partial rewire may be necessary. This is because new building work will need new wiring which will need to conform to Part P: Electrical Safety guidance. In order to ensure that existing wiring is able to carry the additional loads, improvements will need to be made, including making sure your wiring meets Earthing requirements and any cross bonding is satisfactory.
