Electrical Horley Surrey Fuseboard

It’s important that you know where your fuseboard is in case you ever need to turn the electricity off in an emergency.

What do Fuseboards Do?

Fuseboards control and distribute the electricity that comes into your home from your provider. They are designed to protect your home for electrical faults. It contains three things – the main switch, RCD’s, if it was installed after 2005 (Residual Current Devices) and Circuit breakers/fuses.

Mains Switch - this allows you to turn off the electricity supply to your home. You might have more than one mains switch, for example if your home has electric storage heaters or power to a garage or summer house. In this case you may have a separate fuseboard to cover these.

Circuit Breakers – these are automatic protection devices in the fuseboard that switch off a circuit if they detect a fault. They are similar in size to fuses, but give more precise protection. When they ‘trip’, you can simply reset the switch. But make sure you correct the fault first.

Residual Current Devices (RCD) - these are switches that trip a circuit under dangerous conditions, and instantly disconnect the electricity. RCDs protect electrical circuits by comparing the amount of electrical current flowing into a circuit with the amount of electrical current flowing out of a circuit. If ‘current in’ does not equal ‘current out’ (with a small tolerance) the RCD ‘trips’.

Fuses (may be found in place of circuit breakers) – rewirable fuses have a piece of special fuse wire running between two screws. When a fault or overload current flows through the fuse wire, it will become hot and melt. The melted fuse breaks the circuit, disconnecting the faulty circuit.

If you are unsure as to the type you have in your home give us a call and we are more than happy to give a free no obligation quote. Should it be necessary for you to upgrade your fuseboard for safety reasons remember BAWN will install an emergency light for FREE. If your fuseboard has a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a mixture of fuses it is likely that it dates back to before the 1960s and will need to be replaced, Sooner rather than later.
